Col Richard 'Dick' Guild Memorial service at the USAFA Cemetery

On 31 August 2026 we gathered for a 10 am Memorial Service for Dick Guild at the Memorial Pavillion at the USAF Academy Cemetery. The Colorado weather at that time was cloudy and quite comfortable in what had been a hot and mostly dry August. Seems like Dick had been captain of the USAFA Soccer team when we all were here before. Pilot Training, Dick became one of our more experienced combat fighter pilots. I was surprised to learn he had combat tours in the F-105, F-4, and F-111. Dick and I both arrived at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) at Wright-Patterson in the summer of 1970. We kind of got acquainted harassing each other in the hallways between classes. I've always had the greatest respect for Dick and am proud to be a classmate.

Following the service, many of us gathered for more visiting and a buffet luncheon at the Clubhouse of the Academy's Golf Course. A highlight was inviting anyone to the mic to tell some Dick Guild stories and that produced some great fun. Jim Hannam told about a rather hilarious prank where Dick gave himself the call sign of 'Nobody'. That resulted in such radio transmissions as 'Nobody is cleared to taxi' and 'Nobody is cleared for takeoff.' Sounded like he was shut down fairly quickly. Was probably safer than using a call sign of 'Everybody'.

These are notes used by Dick's son and his sister that provide great material in each for insights into Dick's life and his accomplishments after 5 June 1963.
